Bayer Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka Secures German Cup Triumph

Early Strike Secures Victory

Berlin, Germany - May 25, 2024

A superb strike from Granit Xhaka proved the decisive moment as Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen edged past FC Kaiserslautern 1-0 to lift the German Cup on Saturday.

Xhaka's early goal gave Leverkusen the initiative, and despite playing with 10 men for the majority of the second half, the Werkself held on to secure their first major trophy since 2019.

"It's an incredible feeling," said Xhaka after the match. "I'm so proud of the team. We showed great character and determination today."

Leverkusen took the lead in the 16th minute when Xhaka unleashed a powerful shot from 30 yards out that flew into the top corner of the net. The Switzerland international's strike proved to be the only goal of the game, although Kaiserslautern came close to equalizing on several occasions.

Leverkusen's task was made more difficult when defender Edmond Tapsoba was sent off in the 63rd minute for a second yellow card. However, the defending champions showed great resilience to withstand Kaiserslautern's late pressure and secure the victory.

"We had a game plan and we stuck to it," said Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso. "Even when we went down to 10 men, we never gave up. I'm delighted for the players and for the club."

The victory marks a significant achievement for Leverkusen, who have now won their second German Cup title in three seasons. It is also a personal triumph for Xhaka, who has been in excellent form since joining the club from Arsenal in 2022.
