France Powers Past Poland 3-1 in World Cup Round of 16
Giroud, Mbappe Lead French Attack
Defending Champions Advance to Quarterfinals
DOHA, Qatar - Defending champions France booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-1 victory over Poland in the knockout stage on Sunday.
Olivier Giroud gave France an early lead in the 44th minute, becoming France's all-time leading goal scorer in the process. Kylian Mbappe then took over, scoring two second-half goals to put the game out of reach for Poland.
Robert Lewandowski's late penalty for Poland proved to be a mere consolation, as France controlled the game throughout. The French defense held firm, limiting Poland to just a few clear-cut chances.
With the win, France sets up a quarterfinal clash against the winner of the England vs. Senegal match. The defending champions will be confident of continuing their pursuit of a second consecutive World Cup title.
